my family have been to Muskogee to visit the memorial.
Only one of her 11 children is still living, and he visited
the memorial for his last time a year ago. Mrs. Fortier's

Comments: Just signed on and am looking. I was 10 years USNR, acdu, enlisted,
and though mostly with Seabee types and later a couple of years in public
relations, was always around naval aviation -- I've spent more time at sea
(including a couple of square-riggers) since getting out of the Navy than I
ever did in it ;-)From early 1968 through late 1971 I lived in England, and
spent three years with the RN Historical Branch researching material on the
fleet carrier HMS VICTORIOUS (in 1943 aka USS ROBIN), and other digging in
Olde Stuffe. I got this site from a friend up in Canada, who has a heavy
interest in WWII material.

served on her in the mid 50's. He passed away at a very early age of 54 in
Salina, Kansas - 1976. He had retired from the service in 1961 after 20 years.
I have recently been talking to a co-worker wh's father was also in the sub
service and got me to thinking maybe there would be sites for the different
boats - I'm glad I found you ! It would be fun to see if anyone out there
remembers him - most of the guys used to call him ' Pasqually' because of his
last name. He left behind 4 sons and 1 daughter and we would love to hear from
anyone who might remember. Thanks in advance - I look forward to hearing from
you !! Mark Parscale - mp@pds-btr.com

Comments: My son sent me this site, he came across it recently, while
web-surfing. My Dad, Harold W. Belcher, served on the Batfish during
WWII. Growing up, we always heard great things about the friendships and
bonds that have spanned lifetimes with those fellows he served with. He and
my mother, Lois, always enjoyed going to the reunions. I was able to attend
one of the Batfish sidebar dinners held in Little Italy, during one of them
which was held in Baltimore, MD quite a few years back at the invite of my
Dad's best friend, Bob Fulton. I still have my copy of the Batfish book which
those shipmates signed for me during that special evening. My Dad died in Jan.
1983, my mother is living in Naples, FL. I just wanted to say hello and say
keep up the good work. Someday I hope to make it to see the Batfish in OK.

Comments: Although I am divorced from his daughter now, my
ex-father-in-law, Harold W. Belcher, and his best friend, Bob Fulton were crew
mates together on the USS Batfish. I have fond memories of--on more than one
occasion--having a few beers with Harold and listening to his tales related to
his service onboard the USS Batfish. As a Vietnam era veteran, I always
lamented the fact that I had never met Harold's son, Robert who made the
ultimate sacrifice during the Vietnam War. However, I have always tried to
instill a sense of pride in my two children (Harold's grandchildren and Robert's
nephew and niece) with regard to service to nation and sacrifice, and am proud
to say it took. They share their findings (as my son has vis-a-vis your web
site) with their grandmother, Lois Belcher and their mother, Bev. I am
very proud of my two children. They have done the same type of data finding
with regard to Khe Sanh and their uncle, Robert and shared with their
grandmother and maother. God's speed and my warmest regards to Bob Fulton,
if you are ever in touch with him.

wish is that the resolution on the crew shot was somehow bigger so that I
could look at the sailors faces and try to pick out my grandfather. Thanks

had an uncle in subs in WW2 and I have had great interest in them since
childhood and I have read a lot about them. I am looking forward to owning
the Batfish book as well. I had the opportunity to meet and talk with
Hans Goebler several years ago. He was a German submariner who served
in the control room of U-505 and was on the boat when she was captured. I
recently learned that he passed away 2 years ago. I am looking forward to
visiting Batfish again this summer and hopefully meeting some of the brave
men who sailed her. Are there any reunions scheduled that a landlubber might
attend? What a great site you have! I found it by doing a search on "USS
Batfish" on Yahoo. I am looking forward to another visit to your boat. It
is a wonderful thing you are doing to preserve and honor the Batfish and
the men who served in her. Carry on, Sailors!

condition the Batfish is now in. Brought my grandson to visit and
begin to appreciate the history of all submariners (his uncle was a member

sacrifice of WWII submarines and their crews was brought to life by our
visit to the Batfish. Thanks for the web site so my grandson can revisit

doomed her too. although i may be discharged i still have pride in
the Navy. Meskogee Oklahoma has sent her to her grave. She is rottting and
sitting in a mud pit and we are about to loose a piece of history that can't
be replaced. Both myself and my father in-law (23 years retired USN) have
volinteered our time and sweat to get it back to par, or at least stop it from
rusting away. We were told it wasent our problem. If the Navy was to see the
condition of the prise of WW 2 they would remove it. I plan to make another
trip out there soon and take some pictures. After you see them i have no doubt
that you will agree with me that something needs to be done fast to protect this

site today when I saw an article in the arizona republic newspaper. The name
of the sub mentioned in the article was the Batfish and I was not sure it was
the same sub until I looked up the site. The article had to do with the Batfish
tailing a Russian sub for 50 days without being detected. The Batfish commander
at that time was Retired Rear Adm, Thomas Evans. This would have occurred in 1978
I believe.

pics of the Batfish in her home out in OK. It makes me wish I were able to go out there to visit. If memory serves me correctly, we have some pics of her commissioning in Kittery, if you would be interested. It's a family hobby to keep tabs on the Batfish, carried over from our matriarch, Nellie Hobbs Fortier, the sponsor of the Batfish all those years ago. It's nice to see others have the same interests in keeping the memories alive.
